The Abia State Police Command has launched an investigation following reports of more than 30 unidentified bodies found in the Imo River within the Oriendu community. Traditional ruler HRH Eze Philip Ajomiwe raised the alarm, revealing that since 2024, numerous corpses, primarily of young women, have been discovered, often mutilated and missing body parts. These bodies are believed to be dumped during nighttime by suspected ritualists from neighboring Imo State.
Police Public Relations Officer Maureen Chilaka confirmed the initiation of an investigation by the Divisional Police Officer of Ohuhu Police Division. Despite no formal complaints, the police, in collaboration with local vigilante groups, are determined to identify and apprehend those responsible for these heinous acts.
Eze Ajomiwe expressed deep concern over the community's safety, noting that the local vigilante group lacks the necessary equipment to confront the heavily armed perpetrators. He has formally reported the situation to security agencies, including the Department of State Services, and has appealed to the state government for support to empower the vigilante group with adequate resources.
The community, sharing a boundary with Imo State, remains on high alert as authorities intensify efforts to address the alarming trend of suspected ritual killings and ensure the safety of residents.
