Four gang members in Leeds have been sentenced following a violent incident in July 2024, where they chased a 17-year-old rival through the streets, armed with machetes and a firearm. The confrontation took place in Gipton, East Leeds, around 3 p.m. on July 7, 2024. During the pursuit, a handgun was fired at the victim, but the bullet became lodged in the barrel of the modified blank-firing pistol, allowing the teenager to escape into a nearby convenience store.
The suspects, known members of a local street gang, were arrested shortly after in the Harehills area. Police recovered multiple machetes and the malfunctioning firearm. CCTV footage confirmed that the suspects had walked miles into a rival gang's territory, seemingly targeting anyone affiliated with the opposing group. Despite clear evidence, the victim refused to cooperate with the investigation.
Charged with attempted murder, affray, and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, the four pleaded guilty to the firearm and affray charges. Their sentences ranged from four years and nine months to seven years and five months in custody.
Detective Chief Inspector Michael Herbert, who led the investigation, emphasized the severity of the attack, noting that it took place in a residential area during the afternoon and was witnessed by numerous bystanders, including children. He condemned the gang's reckless disregard for public safety.
