Gene Hackman, the esteemed two-time Oscar-winning actor renowned for his roles in The French Connection and Unforgiven, was discovered deceased alongside his wife, Betsy Arakawa, and their dog at their residence in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The couple had not been seen for approximately two weeks before maintenance workers made the tragic discovery on February 26, 2025. Hackman was 95 years old, and Arakawa was 63.
Authorities reported that Hackman was found in a mudroom near the kitchen, while Arakawa was located in a bathroom with prescription pills scattered nearby. One of their dogs was also found deceased in a closet, while two other dogs were found alive on the property. Initial investigations revealed no signs of external trauma or gas leaks, and the cause of death remains under investigation.
Hackman’s illustrious career spanned over four decades, with more than 80 films to his credit. He retired from acting in 2004 and had been living a private life in New Mexico. Hollywood figures have expressed their condolences, with director Francis Ford Coppola describing Hackman as “a great actor, inspiring and magnificent in his work and complexity.”
