A tragic incident occurred in Davenport, Florida, on February 21, 2025, when 4-year-old Chosen Morris accidentally shot himself with a handgun he found under the driver's seat of his family's car. The family was preparing to go out for pizza; Chosen's father was in the bathroom, and his mother was on the computer when she heard a "pop" sound. Upon investigating, she found Chosen in the driver's seat with a gunshot wound to his head. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead the following day.
Davenport Police Chief Steve Parker described the event as a "tragic accident" and confirmed that no charges would be filed against the parents. Authorities believe Chosen may have entered the car out of excitement for the outing and unknowingly accessed the unsecured firearm, which belonged to his father.
Chief Parker emphasized the importance of gun safety, urging firearm owners to properly secure their weapons to prevent such heartbreaking incidents. He advised using trigger locks or locked storage to ensure firearms are not accessible to children.
