Lagos Police Denies Arrest Over Polygamy, Confirms Domestic Violence Case

Lady

The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed claims that officers arrested a man, Charles Chiawa, at the request of his wife for taking a second wife. Instead, the police clarified that Chiawa was detained for domestic violence.

Reports had initially suggested that Charles was arrested after his wife, Uche Chiawa, allegedly used her connections to have him detained at Ejigbo Police Station for marrying another woman. The couple, married for 20 years, reportedly faced issues after Charles had a child with another woman eight years ago.

Charles insisted he had the right to take another wife under traditional marriage customs, but Uche argued that their union was also registered as a court marriage, giving her legal grounds to take action. In response to the allegations, she stated, "I used the police to arrest him because he always beats me."

A source familiar with the situation claimed that Uche had used her influence to ensure Charles remained in detention, blocking attempts to secure his release.

However, the Lagos State Police Command has refuted these claims. Spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin clarified that Charles was arrested for domestic violence, not polygamy.

“The suspect, Charles Chiawa, aged 35, was arrested for domestic violence. While at the station, he threatened to kill his wife in the presence of the DPO and other officers,” Hundeyin stated.

He added that due to the severity of the threat, Charles was transferred to the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command for further investigation and prosecution.

The police emphasized their commitment to tackling all forms of domestic and sexual violence, reaffirming that such cases will not be taken lightly.
