In Shivpuri district, Madhya Pradesh, a six-month-old infant named Mayank suffered severe facial burns after his parents subjected him to a ritual by a local tantrik, aiming to treat an ailment. The burns have critically affected his cheeks, lips, and both eyes, with doctors fearing potential loss of vision.
The incident occurred in Hanuman Colony, where the child's father, Aadesh Verma, brought Mayank to the district hospital's eye department. Upon examination, eye specialist Dr. Girish Chaturvedi discovered multiple burn injuries. Initially, the mother admitted they had consulted a tantrik in Ramnagar, Kolaras, where the injuries were inflicted during the ritual. However, the parents later altered their account, claiming the burns resulted from a kitchen accident involving hot tea.
Dr. Chaturvedi highlighted the severity of Mayank's condition on social media, urging authorities to take strict action against those responsible. He noted that the baby's corneas were damaged, placing his eyesight in jeopardy. Despite the critical nature of the case, hospital management has reportedly downplayed the incident. Civil Surgeon B.L. Yadav confirmed that the injuries were due to superstitious practices and stated that the police have been informed.
This tragic event underscores the dangers of superstitious rituals. Similar incidents have been reported in Madhya Pradesh; notably, three infants died within two weeks after being branded with hot iron in attempts to cure ailments. Such practices highlight the urgent need for public awareness and education to prevent further harm to vulnerable children.
Authorities are investigating the incident, and medical professionals continue to monitor Mayank's condition, hoping to preserve his vision and overall health.
